How to style oversized tees
Oversized tees look effortless when the proportions are right, and awkward when they are not. Five ways to wear a single Cultured Worth Living Tee, plus a short list of what to avoid.
The rule under the rule
Oversized only works when at least one other element in the outfit is fitted. If everything is loose, you look like you got dressed in the dark. If everything is tight, the tee reads as a mistake. Pick your loose piece, then tighten around it.
Five ways to wear it
01. The daytime default
Wear it with: a fitted straight-leg jean, a low white sneaker, a canvas tote.
Why: the jean gives the tee something to sit against. This is the outfit that works from a coffee run to a lunch meeting without you having to think about it.
02. The going-out layer
Wear it with: a leather jacket unbuttoned, black relaxed trousers, a chunky lace-up boot.
Why: the jacket adds structure at the shoulders, which fixes the biggest issue with oversized tees: they can make you look wide instead of loose. This outfit is heavier at the top than the bottom, which is the correct silhouette.
03. The full oversized (done right)
Wear it with: our Movement Pants in sand, a bucket hat, a low-profile trainer.
Why: this is the one that breaks the rule above, on purpose. When both pieces are oversized, keep the palette tight (two tones max) and add a hat to reset the proportions at the top. Only works with actual matching pieces, not two random oversized items.
04. The layered summer look
Wear it with: a fitted long-sleeve underneath (white or contrast), tailored shorts, minimal sneakers.
Why: the long-sleeve under a tee is one of the most reliable moves in streetwear. It adds depth without adding heat, and it works for Dubai temperatures because the long-sleeve can be cotton or mesh.
05. The dressed-up version
Wear it with: pleated wool trousers, a loafer, a slim leather belt.
Why: heavyweight graphic tees can sit under tailoring the same way a shirt would. The tee's boxy cut plays against the drape of the trouser. This is the outfit for the dinner where you did not want to wear a shirt.
What to avoid
- Skinny jeans. The proportion clash is unforgivable. If the tee is loose, the pant needs to have some room.
- Length past mid-thigh. If the hem is closer to your knees than your hip, the tee is not oversized, it is the wrong size. Size down.
- Big graphic on big graphic. If the tee has a bold front graphic, do not layer another one on top. Let one piece talk.
- The half-tuck. Front-tucks work on fitted tees. On oversized tees they read as awkward. Full untucked, or full tucked into a high-waisted pant. No in-between.
